In the National League Division Series, the Dodgers faced a 2-1 deficit to their division rival San Diego Padres before rallying to take the series in five games. Because Verdugo went out of play with the ball, the runners were awarded one base, advancing them to second and third. With the Dodgers down to their final out, the Yankees intentionally walked Betts, thus loading the bases and bringing Freddie Freeman to the plate. On the first pitch, Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam over the right field wall, winning Game 1 for Los Angeles. This is the third consecutive World Series Game 1 to be decided in extra innings, after it previously occurred in 2022 and 2023.
The Yankees struggled at the plate for eight of nine innings, finally coming alive in the top of the ninth with Soto leading the way. However, despite having the bases loaded, they couldn’t force the Dodgers to respond.

With the bases loaded and no one out, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole would strike out the next two batters. Now with two outs, Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts hit a soft grounder to Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo, but Cole did not cover first base and Rizzo couldn’t beat the speedy Betts to the bag, giving Los Angeles its first run of the game.
After two years of bitter competition and player raiding, the National and American Leagues made peace and, as part of the accord, several pairs of teams squared off for interleague exhibition games following the 1903 season. These series were arranged by the participating clubs, as the 1880s World’s Series matches had been. One of them, a best-of-nine affair matching that year’s pennant winners – the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL and Boston Americans (later known as the Red Sox) of the AL – has come to be regarded as the 1903 World Series. It had been arranged well in advance by the two club owners, as both teams were league leaders by large margins.

After his heroics in Game 4, Anthony Volpe sat down with Derek Jeter who told him there are kids who want to be just like Volpe when they grow up. The moment was special for the current Yankees shortstop who idolized Jeter as a kid.
“In my eyes, he’s a superhero, really, honestly and truly,” Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda said. “Watching him get through the injury and seeing the rehab he put in, the time he put in and just trying to get back to health, to get back on the field, doing everything he can — that speaks volumes of him as a player and as a person. He really cares about this group. He cares about the organization. He cares about winning, and that’s what drives us all.”
Dodgers players, decked out in goggles as is now traditional for title-winning teams, shared hugs – including the Japanese pairing of Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto – and enjoyed the moment with music blaring in the background, including unofficial LA city anthem, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

Whatever answer Martinez gives to justify his faith in Scherzer, there really was only one reason to leave the 35-year-old on the mound as the Astros continued to reach base: The skipper felt this version of Scherzer still gave Washington its best chance to win. Unless Scherzer’s right arm was completely detached from his shoulder, nothing was going to force Martinez to use his bullpen so long as the Nats remained within two or three runs of the lead.
The World Series was televised by Fox for the 20th straight year. Joe Buck called the games as play-by-play announcer along with John Smoltz as color commentator and Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci as field reporters. Kevin Burkhardt hosted the network’s pregame shows, joined by analysts Frank Thomas, Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. Fox Deportes aired the series in Spanish, with Rolando Nichols calling the play-by-play, Edgar Gonzalez as color commentator, and Carlos Álvarez as field reporter.
We know this much: Washington must improve a few things behind the scenes no matter who buys the franchise. There are player development and R&D issues that must be addressed to become a consistent contender in this era of baseball. The Nationals won 93-plus games five times in an eight-game span from 2012-19, but what worked back then doesn’t necessarily work now. The Soto trade was an unfortunate — and I’d argue unnecessary step — but what’s done is done, and now the Nationals must begin the process of getting the organization back on the rails.
• Clemens is the only pitcher to have started a Game 7 four times in his career. Amazingly, The Rocket did that for three teams and over a span of 19 seasons. Clemens was just 24 when he tossed seven strong innings to lead the Red Sox over the Angels in Game 7 of the 1986 ALCS at Fenway Park, but he was 42 when he was charged with the loss as the Astros dropped Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS to the Cardinals. In between, Clemens took the ball for the Yanks in the final games of the ’01 World Series and ’03 ALCS.
Verlander exited after five innings, having allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three batters. In the top of the seventh inning, Trea Turner was controversially called out for interference on a play at first base, which Washington manager Dave Martinez furiously took issue with, leading to his ejection. It was the first time a manager had been ejected from a World Series game since Bobby Cox in 1996. Later that inning, a two-out, two-run home run by Rendon off Will Harris—who had not allowed an earned run in the postseason—increased Washington’s lead to 5–2. Rendon batted in two more runs in the top of the ninth with a double off Chris Devenski, extending the Nationals’ lead to 7–2. Strasburg left with one out in the bottom of the ninth, having held the Astros to two runs on five hits while striking out seven. Sean Doolittle relieved Strasburg, and allowed a two-out double to Carlos Correa, but nothing further, and the Nationals evened the series to force a deciding seventh game. This was the first instance in MLB, NBA, or NHL history when the road team won the first six games of a best-of-seven series.
